From the Sketchbook

August 26, 2011

Here’s the latest stuff from my sketchbook!

Firstly, a drawing (pencil plus colouring pencils) of my cat on the sofa, from life. It’s a bit too flattering, he’s actually a rather overweight cat, looks a bit scrawny here.

And now, a drawing I did using 2B, 4B and 9B pencil, plus using a fountain pen on the eyes, of the front cover of ‘The Duchess’, that film about the (rather tragic?) Duchess of Devonshire, played by Keira Knightley. Apologies if it’s a rather large photograph but I wanted to get the detail in! The (rather gloomy but visually lovely) film was being shown on TV last night, but I drew this from the DVD cover. Started off looking too much like Natalie Portman, but to be fair they do look similar, and now it’s a bit off, but not aiming for uber-detail/perfection/photorealism, so it’s ok!

Sometimes it’s just comforting to use soft pencils and chiaroscuro again.
